In the land of cowboy boots, oil wells, and extreme political conservatism, one woman rose to make a political and lasting impact… and she’s gay. It is Annise Parker that has made Houston, Texas the largest U.S. city with a gay mayor and has proclaimed that Texan voters have, “opened the door to history,” by electing her as their political representative. Parker hasn’t just been advocating for LGBT rights while in the office. She is also the founding member of the gay alliance at Rice University. Despite the pushback that a liberal mayor in a conservative state faces frequently, Parker’s efforts have been largely successful and she continues to forge the way for the LGBT community in Texas.
